Lines Cawl

This cowl is worked in spiral rounds so that there is no visible seam. It uses a simultaneous crochet technique where two colors are worked at the same time. This version is a straight tube, making it the perfect neck warmer.

Materials

• Yarn: Any leftover yarn for the colored stripes and one consistent contrast color (e.g., Light Gray).
• Hook: 4 mm (or matching your yarn weight).
• Accessories: Darning needle for weaving in ends.

Stitch Key & Technique

• Main Color (MC): Always work Double Crochet (dc).
• Contrast Color (CC): Always work Half Double Crochet (hdc).
• Spiral Rounds: Do not close rounds with a slip stitch; simply continue crocheting in a continuous spiral.

Instructions

1. The Foundation

• Crochet a foundation chain of approx. 90 chain stitches (or as many as needed to fit comfortably around your neck and tight around your head).
• Row 1: Crochet one full row of double crochets into the chains. You can start with 2 chains or a "foundation double crochet".
• Joining: Form a ring by slip-stitching into the first double crochet. Make sure the chain is not twisted.

2. Transitioning to the Spiral

• To create a smooth transition into the spiral, work the following into the first stitches of the new round: 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, and then continue with double crochets.
• Pull the loop of the Main Color long and remove your hook.

3. Adding the Contrast Color & Simultaneous Crocheting

• Tie your contrast color (CC) yarn to the point where you joined the round.
• Work half double crochets with the CC.
• The Principle: Crochet a section (e.g., half a round) with the Main Color in double crochets, then "catch up" with the Contrast Color in half double crochets.
• Because double crochets are taller than half double crochets, the colors will "chase" each other without needing to close rounds or cut yarn.
• Repeat until your snood reaches the desired height. Since there are no increases, it will form a straight tube.

4. Finishing & Leveling the Edge

Once you are almost out of yarn or have reached the desired height, you must taper off the spirals to create a straight edge:

1. Main Color (MC): Transition from double crochets to half double crochets (for about 10–15 stitches), then to single crochets, and finally 2–3 slip stitches. Cut the yarn and pull it through.
2. Contrast Color (CC): Crochet with the CC until you reach the end point of the MC. Transition immediately from half double crochets to single crochets, and then to slip stitches.

Final Touches

• Weave in all ends carefully on the inside.
• Important: Do not just cut the yarn short. Use a darning needle to weave the tail in one direction and then back again in a "U-shape" to ensure it doesn't come loose during washing.
